Platelets are basically little bags full of clotting factors, potent growth factors, and cytokines that circulate in the blood. Their usual role is to rupture in response to an injury, releasing their potent cocktail. The factors induce blood clotting to seal the wound, while the growth factors induce rapid healing of the injured tissues. The cytokines attract immune cells to fight off any bacteria that entered through the wound, and they also attract stem cells to help heal the injury. PRP treatments take this naturally-occurring phenomenon and use it to rejuvenate your hair and face.
Doctors have found that concentrated solutions of platelets, namely platelet-rich plasma (PRP), can be used to induce healing of chronic injuries such as tendonitis and also to rejuvenate aging tissues. The rejuvenation effect is likely due to a combination of the growth factors inducing healing and the stem cells attracted to the site that induce the formation of new youthful tissue.
Hair loss is a major problem for both men and women. Around 50% of men will have visibly thinning hair by age 50, and many begin balding in their 20s and 30s. Women often struggle with thinning hair as well, although most women don’t begin to experience thinning hair until their 60s or older. Current treatments for thinning hair tend to not be very satisfactory. However, injections of PRP into the scalp have been shown to not only stop the balding process but to also trigger the regrowth of new hair. The usual procedure is to inject PRP once a month for three months, and then to perform a maintenance treatment once a year thereafter. Noticeable hair re-growth is usually seen after the second treatment and it continues to improve over time.
PRP treatments can also be used to rejuvenate the face-fill in fine lines and wrinkles, plump the skin, heal acne scars, and basically restore a more youthful appearance. Similar to treatments for hair loss, PRP is injected once a month for three months, and then a yearly maintenance treatment is performed. Results begin to be apparent about a month after the first injection and continue to improve thereafter.
What is the procedure like?
A blood sample is drawn. While the patient waits, the PRP is prepared, a process that takes 10 to 15 minutes. The PRP is then injected in the area where rejuvenation or growth is desired. PRP treatments are fairly quick and easy, and they result in natural results as the treatment itself is natural and made from your own body.
Is it safe?
Since the PRP is prepared from the patient’s own blood, there is no risk of disease transmission, allergic reactions, or rejection. As with any injection, there is a very low risk of an infection developing at the injection site.
