There are several minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins, including some that use heat and some that use chemicals to close the vein, but varicose vein treatment with Venaseal™ is a recent innovation that uses medical-grade glue to close the affected vein and bypass several side effects.
If a main vein in the leg has lost strength in its wall and valves and therefore fails to push the blood against gravity and back to the heart and lungs, the blood starts to collect in the vein and stretches it out of shape. This process results in a varicose vein that not only has a negative impact on one’s appearance, but it can also bring much discomfort. If left untreated, varicose veins can even pose a danger to the affected person’s health.
Varicose vein treatment with Venaseal™ involves closing the main saphenous vein. The glue is administered with a small catheter. Some other endovenous treatments require a more involved procedure. Unlike other varicose vein treatment options, you don’t need to wear compression stockings after the treatment, and you won’t have to worry about downtime.
When you come in for your consultation with our specialist, your varicose veins may be examined. There are several tests that may be performed, including an ultrasound test to determine the beginning and end of the problem vein. If Venaseal™ is your best option, you will learn more about what is involved in the procedure. This will also be your first chance to bring up any questions or concerns you may have. Most side effects are quite mild and will disappear quickly. Unlike heat-based procedures, there is no risk of skin burns or nerve damage.
The procedure involves inserting a catheter into the affected vein. Our specialist will then carefully guide the position of the catheter. The glue will be administered inside the vein through this small tube. The catheter will be removed and a bandage will be placed on the entry point. A varicose vein treatment session with Venaseal™ typically does not take much time to complete.
After the procedure, you may be asked to rest for a few minutes, but walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged, and you can resume normal daily activities. Our specialist will inform you of any observations that will be made after the treatment and any special instructions you may need to follow.
Venaseal™ is made from special medical superglue called a cyanoacrylate. It has been used since the 1950s for repairing wounds and surgical incisions. It rapidly seals the vein, leaving the blood to naturally flow through healthy veins. This type of glue has even been used in:
- Cosmetic procedures
- Orthopedic procedures
- Ophthalmic surgery
- Dental procedures
If you suffer from varicose veins, it is recommended to treat them before they develop into more serious problems such as blood clots. With Venaseal™, you may be able to close your veins and let your body absorb them so you can have smooth legs again.
