There are many treatments available for varicose veins starting with conservative therapy and ending with surgery. If your varicose veins are still small you may qualify for conservative therapy. When the veins fail to function properly to move the blood back to the heart it is called venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are not a serious condition in themselves, but without treatment, they may develop into several serious conditions that can undermine your general health.
Some people have few or no symptoms with their varicose veins, while others experience swelling, heaviness, aches and pains, itching, cramps and restless legs. You may have one or two symptoms or all of them. In some cases, they can interrupt sleep at night.
What Is Conservative Therapy for Varicose Veins?
Our vein expert will examine your veins to determine the extent of the insufficiency. Conservative therapy may include lifestyle changes, compression stockings and exercise. There is no medical procedure with conservative therapy. The technique we most often recommend involves compression stockings.
Compression stockings – graduated compression stockings have proved to be very effective as a conservative treatment as well as aftercare from surgery or non-surgical treatments. The stockings are designed to put enough pressure on the vein to stop blood from pooling. Graduated compression means the pressure is the strongest at the ankle and becomes less as it moves up the leg.
If conservative therapy is not having the desired effect, we may recommend a minimally-invasive treatment such as sclerotherapy or radiofrequency ablation treatment. These treatments damage the vein wall and cause it to close. The blood will naturally flow through healthy veins. Over a few months, the closed varicose veins will be absorbed by the body and disappear.
